Location: Berth 10 Skarfabakki, Reykjavík, Iceland

Science Update: Expedition 396 Scientists completed all shipboard measurements and reports.

The 877 nmi from Site U1574 to Reykjavík was completed at 1648 h with the first line ashore at Berth 10 Skarfabakki Port, in Reykjavík, Iceland, ending Expedition 396.

Daily Science Report for 4 October 2021

Location: Underway to Reykjavík, Iceland. Midnight position 63°5.50′N, 21°5.00′W.

Science Update: The expedition scientists continued to write shipboard reports.

Today we transited 256 nmi at an average speed of 10.7 kt. We have 143 nmi remaining to Reykjavík, Iceland. The estimated time of arrival at the pilot station is 1600 h on 5 October.

Daily Science Report for 3 October 2021

Location: Underway to Reykjavík, Iceland. Midnight position 64°22.8′N, 12°19.0′W.

Science Update: The expedition scientists continued to analyze the last samples from Site U1574 and to write and edit shipboard reports.

Today we transited 269 nmi at an average speed of 11.2 kt. We have 399 nmi remaining to Reykjavík, Iceland. The estimated time of arrival is late afternoon on 5 October.

Daily Science Report for 2 October 2021

Location:

  • Hole U1574C (68°36.0005′N, 4°38.4632′E; water depth 2819.6 mbsl; proposed Site VMVM-80A).
  • Underway to Reykjavík, Iceland. Midnight position 66°44.50′N, 3°5.80′W.

Science Update: The day began while recovering the drill string from a water depth of 136.8 mbrf. The rig crew broke down the BHA, laid out the drill collars, and secured the rig floor for transit at 0230 h. The thrusters were raised, and at 0300 h the JOIDES Resolution began the sea passage to Reykjavík, Iceland. By midnight, we had covered 209 nmi at an average speed of 10 kt.

Today we measured and described Cores U1574C-12H to 20X, marking the end of core description and measurements for this expedition. Cores 12H to 19H mainly consist of very dark gray finely-laminated claystone. Diagenetic pyrite is present throughout and trace gastropods are observed. Thin bluish black sand beds are common in Cores 16H to 18H. Core 20X mainly consists of dark grayish brown meta limestone, black brecciated pillow basalt, aphyric basalt, and sparsely plagioclase phyric basalt with hyaloclastite at the bottom of the core.

The Co-Chief Scientists presented an overview of the operational and scientific achievements of the expedition, and we continued to prepare and review shipboard reports.

Daily Science Report for 1 October 2021

Location: Hole U1574C (68°36.0005′N, 4°38.4632′E; water depth 2819.6 mbsl; proposed Site VMVM-80A).

Science Update: Today we completed coring operations at Site U1574. Cores U1574C-7H to 19H extended the hole from 56.6 to 169.2 mbsf, recovering 115.15 m of sediment (102%). We then changed to the XCB coring system to cut Core 20X to a final depth of 171.5 mbsf (1.47 m of core recovered, or 64%). The last core of Hole U1574C and of Expedition 396 was recovered on deck at 1655 h. Total core recovered in Hole U1574C was 175.02 m (102%).

After all coring tools were secured, we began to pull the drill string out of the hole, clearing the seafloor at 1920 h. The acoustic beacon was released at 2141 h and recovered. By end of the day, we had raised the end of the pipe to 136.8 mbrf.

In the laboratories, we measured and described Cores U1574C-1H to 11H. Cores 1H to Section 4H-2 consists of brown and grayish brown unconsolidated silty clay. The remaining sections of Core 4H consist of light yellowish brown and greenish gray clay with sand with occasional nodules. Cores 5H to 11H consist of alternating dark greenish gray finely-laminated claystone and ash. At 1230 h, we held the science summary meeting for Sites U1573 and U1574 with the participation of the onshore members of the science party. We continued to prepare and review shipboard reports.
